Special Ed IEP Journey San Francisco Bay Area
Having a student with an IEP due to a disability can be a complex journey that seems to never let up in intensity. There can be times of relative calm, but often parents know that there is another storm brewing on the horizon. So we hunker down, take some time to regroup, relax a bit and get our ducks in a row……..and wait.
Now, not everyone’s special education experience is this intense but for many it does seem like a constant battle with the school. The simplest request can be met with either hostility and push back, or a total lack of response. As parents go along their journey they often learn how to navigate their particular district and staff. They know who to ask, and who not to engage, when seeking help. Parents can also learn that it does not matter who they ask, they will will not get help from anyone.
One aspect that can be surprising to families new to the process is that special education is highly political, which drives so many of the issues surrounding it. Parents are wanting to discuss their child’s individual needs, and school are trying to not spend money (although money can never be discussed with regards to what services and supports may be appropriate for a student). So what often happens is a parallel conversation that appears to be discussing the student but in reality it does not. This is where the frustration comes from and is fueled by. Requests are made, and the wait begins.
“Services delayed are services denied”. This saying perfectly frames the above parallel conversation. It also is why hiring an advocate may be necessary. School districts often force parents to seek help because they choose to do nothing, whether they are doing that by being nice, nasty, or unresponsive.
