IEP Special Education Resources San Jose Santa Clara County
First, the back to school sales are starting. Whether you are excited about school starting again soon or dreading it (or both at the same time), the first day of school is near.
Knowledge is Power
Second, it is always good to know where to find expert assistance. Below are some local sources of information for everyone parenting a disabled child, or for those who suspect their child may need extra help.
Parents Helping Parents www.php.com
Where to begin? Because we live in Santa Clara County, one might naturally assume that there is an equivalent agency in nearby counties. Nope! We are lucky they are located here. Most of the people who work there are parents of children with special needs. They respond quickly and helpfully on questions of all sorts. Besides providing phone support, they offer support groups, parent groups, on-going education on IEPs and adult services. Besides all of the above, PHP hosts events where parents can meet providers or learn about new service and education options.
California Department of Education www.cde.ca.gov/sp/se/
The CDE provides information and resources to serve the unique needs of persons with disabilities. Their goal is each person will meet or exceed high standards of achievement in academic and nonacademic skills. They investigate all IEP compliance complaints. How often have you signed an IEP, and the school is not following or fully implementing it? The Department of Education will follow up. Fill out a simple, two-page form with your concerns, attach the IEP, and send it to them. They will investigate. If they determine you are correct, they will order the district to fully implement the IEP. As they provide school funding, they have authority to make things happen.
Disability Rights California www.disabilityrightsca.org
DRC provides protection and advocacy services in California. Their advocacy can include individual legal advice or representation, support for self-advocacy, outreach and education, investigations, policy advocacy, and impact litigation.
This is a small yet mighty list. We will revisit this topic with more of our favorite resources.
