Special Ed San Jose
Special Ed San Jose – The school year still has several months to go. We have had enough time and experience to know how this year is going for our student. As parents, we know what is going well, and what most emphatically is not.
Some considerations
It Is Not Too Late
It is not too late to change course. A drastic placement change may be challenging between now and the end of school. An exception would be if you had previously laid any groundwork for it.
What Can I Change Now?
What can be changed, though, are any number of things, including but not limited to:
More homework support from teaching staff
Communication logs between teacher and parent
More homework sent home
Less homework sent home
Addressing and modifying IEP areas that do not require formal assessments prior to changing the goal or service
These all require a short IEP Team Meeting to discuss, and can be implemented right after parents sign the IEP.
Even More Important
We often see IEPs where the parents have done a great job of getting the supports and services their child needs written into the IEP. Sometimes, even with a signed IEP contract, the school district is unwilling or unable to fully implement the IEP. The student may be struggling because she is not receiving the services listed in the IEP. He may be be receiving poor grades because the school district has not provided the accommodations listed in his IEP.
What Should I Do?
There is a simple fix for this; a compliance complaint. You still have time to fill out and file one before school ends. It can take 60 days, so the sooner you start, the sooner you will have a resolution. It is simple, and easy. The California Department of Education does all the work for you once you fill out the form.
