How do you know what is right for your student?

As parents, we always want to do what is best for our kids. We weigh options, we test out situations, we talk to other parents, or sometimes we just wing it. Kids are changing and growing constantly. Their behaviors, likes/dislikes, preferences, friends and abilities are always in flux. So it is often hard to stay on top of it all, especially when we have jobs, other kids, spouses, family, etc that we must pay attention to…..and it is no different with children with disabilities.

Being under the microscope of special education, our kids are examined and discussed and scrutinized and assessed over and over again. It is not hard to lose the individual in this process. When every aspect of a child’s life is considered in the educational environment, it really needs to be ok to back off sometimes and just allow certain things to just be…..all children should be able to develop on their own timeline.

There are so many variables in any one’s life that over-analyzing can be a real problem for a disabled child. Where does the disability start and end? Sometimes it is obvious but often it is not…..and it also changes as children grow and mature. It is important to not pathologize disabled students. This takes being aware, respectful, and knowledgeable of the student as an individual, and of the disability itself. Add in the complexities and the usual chaos of life, and what is left is a unique situation involving unique circumstances, with a unique person.

This is why developing and administering an appropriate IEP is so crucial. It needs to be able to consider the individual on many levels and be adaptable to changing needs. Many IEPs are very rote and boiler plate documents without the ability to consider individual needs and this can waste time for students.
