IEP Hack #1: Create your own box on the IEP signature page
After creating your own box, check the box you just created. Immediately next to the checkbox, you can authorize goals (if you are in agreement with them). Another option is to authorize increases in services such as speech, OT, PT, and others. This lets you choose the parts of the IEP you want implemented immediately.
If you are close to getting the IEP finished, but not quite able to agree on some items, this will get your child’s goals implemented or their increased service time started. You may wish to briefly check with someone experienced before using this option.
Some school districts are unfamiliar with this hack and may strongly discourage you from exercising it.
IEP Hack #2: Add any documents you consider relevant to your child’s IEP
We met with a parent who had done a lot of research on why her child needed a particular service; however, her child’s district refused to make it part of her IEP document. As the child’s parent, you are a fully participating member of the IEP team. This means you have the right to add any additional information about your child that may impact his or her education.
IEP Hack #3: Meeting notes are important, and you have the right to participate in them
Meeting notes are part of the IEP contract, and they matter. We always ask to have the meeting notes read at the end of the meeting. If the meeting runs over and there is not time, we ask the school to note that we did not have time to read the meeting notes. Make sure you get them soon after the meeting so you remember all the key details, and go over them carefully. If they are not accurate, correct them! Sometimes districts agree to amend meeting notes; Others insist on adding the parent corrections as a parent addendum. Either is good. Both mean the corrections become part of your child’s educational record and IEP.
