When You Should Hire A Special Education Advocate?

Families often struggle with this question. When IS the best time to hire a special education advocate? Most of us have far more expenses on our budgets than we have excess funds and if there are areas where we can avoid spending: we will.  Many times parents have managed the IEP process and have gotten through it as best they can. They have managed to get their child an IEP or a 504 plan and gotten them some—or even most of—the services they need.

So why should I call a special education advocate?

When you hire a special education advocate and bring them to your meetings with your school district, the experience can be life-changing.  A special education advocate is there to support you and your child!  We care passionately about getting your child the supports and services they need to obtain a free, appropriate, public education (FAPE).  We have special training in special education rules and regulations, and have been to thousands of IEP meetings.

Many parents have done their homework and know a lot about the IEP process. Laws often change or are amended and special education advocates spend extensive time researching how these laws affect the education of children with disabilities. Parents are often surprised at the significant difference it makes having an advocate at the IEP meeting.  We have a bit more distance from the situation than you do; that, combined with our specialized knowledge, gives us an advantage that we use to help your child.

Sometimes, parents will wait to call us until they are deeply frustrated with the system and the process, and they don’t trust themselves to speak without losing their tempers.  With a special education advocate present, parents find that school districts are more collaborative and may offer services or supports that were previously undisclosed.  A special education advocate’s presence allows the parent to focus on being a parent, rather than having to be a parent and fight against the school district.  With our help, frustrated parents know we have their backs and often find their voices again.
