Special Education IEP Options Santa Clara

Your child has an IEP. Did you know students with an IEP have many options for how to receive the services specified in their IEP? Your child’s district will not share all the available options with you. They have programs to fill and teachers with greater or lesser enrollment. Unless you know all the options and are ready and able to actively advocate for them, your child’s placement will be what fits into their already established programs. What’s wrong with that? The first word in IEP is Individualized. While your child is not guaranteed the “best” they are entitled to what will allow them to obtain a free appropriate public education. As parents, it is our job to make sure our students get what they need.

In broad terms, here are some of the options.

Regular education with resource push ins or pull outs.

Regular education with special day class push ins or pull outs.

Special day class with mainstreaming push ins or pull outs.

Few parents know about resource. Resource teachers are special education teachers with a mild to moderate disability teaching credential. While every child is different, we have seen some students who were not challenged in their special day class placements. There were twins where the teacher said they could not read kindergarten material – at age 10. It turns out they were bored witless and had checked out. Most of us would also. The students flourished when placed into Resource for math and English. They were engaged, and advanced because the teacher had expectations that they could learn. Your child does not need to have a minimum level of apparent academic ability to work with a resource teacher.

Talk to an advocate. As parents, we understand,  As advocates, we can help.
